History
Penrice Castle was built in 1773-7, with William Gubbings as mason. In 1790 and 1793 Gubbings was paid for gatepiers; probably the gates, railings and piers of all four entrances to the park were added in the early 1790s.

Exterior
The principal formal gateway in the boundary wall of Penrice Castle park, set to face towards the main approach road from Swansea. The gateway consists of two main sandstone piers carrying the gates and a link section of fixed railings at each side extending to the masonry of the folly or gatehouse. The piers are square, about 3½m apart, heavily rusticated and vermiculated. Tall plinth with base moulding. Small cornice with fine vertical fluting. The finials are stone poppyheads on thin hollow stems. The plinths beneath the fixed railings have been restored. The gates and the side railings are plain, in wrought iron, with dog railings.

Interior

Reason for designation
Listed at II* as part of a picturesque group with the folly gatehouse and detached tower at the main entrance to Penrice park and for group value with Penrice Castle (mansion).
