History
Designed and cut by John Renie for his own use supposedly to confuse the Devil who has to know the name of the dead person to be able to claim him for his own. Probably made shortly before his death in 1832.
Exterior
Sandstone. Tablet surrounded by roll-mould carries the well cut inscription -
JOHN RENIE WHO DIED 31 MAY 1832 AGED 33 YEARS
The name JOHN RENIE is inscribed continuously as an acrostic in 15 lines, each of 19 letters, and can be read in all directions, apparently some 46,000 times.
Reason for designation
Included as a gravestone of unique design and for its special historic interest close to the principal church in Monmouth.
