Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a small burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is located in rough upland pasture at the top of a steep NW-facing slope on a NNE-SSW aligned ridge. The cairn has been built on top of a natural rock outcrop to embellish its size and prominence. It is circular in shape on plan and measures c. 10m in diameter and up to 1.7m in height. It is built from sub-angular pieces of stone, which measure up to 1m in length and have been carefully positioned. The monument appears to be substantially intact and undisturbed.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 20m in diameter.
