Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork enclosure probably dating to the later prehistoric period (c. 800- AD74). The enclosure is situated on a slight ridge and slopes gently towards the south-east. The enclosure is roughly circular, enclosed by a low bank with another outer bank in places. On the south side the bank has an internal height of 0.7m, and an external height of 1m. Outside it is a 6m wide berm, and then another drop of 1-1.4m. On the south-east side the bank has been destroyed by past quarrying. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
