Probably dating to the medieval period, there are 16 evenly spaced stepping stones of blue lias limestone which cross the Afon Alun. They are situated just downstream (north-west) from a ford where the road crosses the river. They are roughly rectangular, c. 0.5-0.7m across and their upper surfaces are very worn.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of early transport systems. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
