Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a bridge, dating to the post-medieval period. The bridge crosses the B4231 road and served the Monmouth tramroad between Howler’s Slade at Coleford and Monmouth, which opened in 1812. The bridge was on a branch line serving the Redbrook tinplate works. The bridge is built of coursed blocks of red Forest of Dean sandstone conglomerate, with dressed voussoirs to the arches. It consists of a single round headed arch spanning the road, with a circular opening uphill on the north-east side.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of xmedieval or post-medieval construction techniques and transportation systems. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
