Enclosed hut circle
Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed hut group of rectangular shape containing two round huts and three or four rectangular huts. Well-preserved terraced fields lie to the S. The enclosure measures some 41 m E - W and 35 m N - S. It is best preserved on the W and N sides, where the enclosing wall is 1.25 m wide and 0.25 m high. The south enclosure wall is overlain by a more recent field wall, which curves round to form a sheepfold in the SW corner of the enclosure. The E wall of the enclosure is barely visible.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
