Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a motte and ditch, dating to the medieval period (c. 1066 -1540 AD). The site comprises a large elongated motte, orientated N/S, with a long and narrow summit 11m long. Its original shape has been altered by the development of the adjacent farm. The mound is steep sided and around 5m high on the W and 3.5m high on the E, where the surrounding ground is slightly higher. The surrounding ditch has been completely filled in. The bailey was probably located to the E. This motte is located on the opposite side of the Afon Llynfi from Trefecca Castle Mound (BR083), and together they would have commanded the gorge of the Llynfi. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval defensive practices. The monument is well-preserved and an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both structural evidence and intact associated deposits. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
