Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. Carreg Quoitan standing stone measures 2.15m tall, 1.35m wide and 1.3m deep. It is oriented E-W and is roughly rectangular in shape on plan. It is earthfast and has an irregularly rounded top. The E and W faces abut a hedge bank. The standing stone is thought to be of religious or ceremonial significance and to date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). This example is an important local landmark and one of a number in the local vicinity. The monument is likely to retain significant archaeological deposits and enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 6m in diameter.
