Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn and a standing stone, which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). They are located in rough pasture on a moderate W-facing slope overlooking the Afon Rheidol. The cairn (Item 'A') is circular in shape on plan and measures c. 20m in diameter and a maximum of 0.8m in height. The standing stone (Item 'B') is situated c. 20m to the SE and measures 0.5m in height, 0.35m in width and 0.25m in thickness. It is earthfast and aligned N-S. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. It is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The monument's importance is further enhanced by its shared group value with scheduled cairns to the N. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is rectangular in shape and measures 50m E-W by 35m transversely.
