Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
A bridge with a single barrel vault of c.7.5 m span. Built of stone throughout. The stone voussoirs are slightly inset from the wall above and are covered by a row of flat coping stones. The bridge is c.4.6 m wide and provides a road width of c.3.6 m. The road is flanked on either side by low parapets. The structure appears to be of a single build.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of post-medieval bridge construction and travel. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
