Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
following provides a general description of the scheduled monument. The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. It comprises a rectangular moated platform c. 50x60m, with a projecting bank, c.40m long, in the SE. The moat is c.4m wide and partially water filled. Low earthworks immediately east of the monument may mark the position of an associated fishpond, while the adjacent field to the SW contains ridge and furrow. No entrance or internal features are visible, but good preservation is anticipated in view of its isolated and waterlogged state. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
