Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period, which is fixed into a stone wall at Llanmihangel Farm. Its mounting into the wall hides many of its features. The weathered and water-worn block of Pennant sandstone forms the upper half of a cross-slab which is 0.82m in height and 0.95m wide at the fracture line (corresponding to the waist) tapering to 0.60m at the top; it is 0.25m deep. The decoration on the main face carved in low relief consists of a cross form with widely splayed arms and elongated sunken hollows between the arms. The arms of the cross have a bold edge-moulding and at the lower left hand is part of a ringed hollow. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described.
