Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a small medieval chapel which stands above the cove. The present building is rectangular without any structural division between the nave. Chancel measures 47ft by 20ft. There are 3 doors, two on the north side, one at the west end. Traces of a paved floor with a step marking the line of the chancel were found. Excavations beneath the floor revealed low stone walls set in clay belongong to a chapel with a nave c28ft by 13ft 6ins, the northern and western walls underlying those of the later building, and a chancel 16ft 6ins by c12ft. These were foundations only. Several burials below the floor level were discovered, one in a rude cist of slabs near the north west angle of the earlier chancel was accompanied by white quartz pebbles.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. The site forms an important element within the wider medieval landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
