Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises a well preserved enclosed hut circle settlement consisting of the foundation walls of three closely set circular huts which, due to the addition of short stretches of interconnecting stone banks, can be seen to form a single settlement unit. The three huts probably date from the Iron Age or early Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400) and from their form are likely to be contemporary. Two of the huts have entrances opening outwards away from the group, while the third faces into the centre, on to what could have been a small internal courtyard or working area. The hut walls still stand to 1m in height and there are surviving internal and external facing stones and a doorway defined by upright orthostats.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric domestic life and social organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of structural evidence and associated archaeological features and deposits, including surviving internal and external floor levels.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
