Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises an impressive standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is a massive block of stone, standing 2.2m in height and measuring 1.2m in thickness and 1.1m in width. The standing stone leans towards the W and a small boggy pool surrounds its base. It is situated on a slight terrace. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument retains significant archaeological potential with a strong probability of associated archaeological features and deposits and forms an important element in the wider prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. Its importance is further enhanced by its proximity to the stone row (or possible stone circle) situated about 400m to the ENE (RD224). The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 15m in diameter.
