Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
It is an area rich in prehistoric and later remains, notably groups of Bronze Age ritual and funerary monuments, prehistoric trackways, and relict settlements and field systems from the Iron Age and medieval periods, which extend over the intermediate slopes and plateaux on the south side of the estuary. Barmouth is sited on the north side at the mouth of the estuary, and there are significant remains of 19th and early 20th centuries gold mining in the valleys and the lower hills to the north east of the town.
