Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
The front block and rear cross wing on the N side is of the mid C17, a date stone of 1665 being set in the rear walling. The re-entrant angle was probably infilled in the C18 or early C19 to complete the rectangular block.

Exterior
Rubble stone with slated roofs, stone stacks. Two storeys, double range plan. The front elevation is of 3 bays, with central 2-storied gabled porch, its upper floor slightly set out on the 3 sides on a half-round moulding. Deep monolithic lintel over the outer elliptical open arch, the inner door boarded with a single light and C17 ironmongery. The windows to either side altered, probably in the C19, timber casements, the N window with a deep stone lintel and surrounding label, all mid-later C19. Small light in the gable of the porch chamber. Copings of gable removed. The rear of the house is pebbledashed, the N bay gabled and having four-light chamfered stone mullioned windows to each floor. Added gabled porch with side door. Three stacks, one providing lateral fireplace to main S reception room. A datestone reading .ILL:1665. is set at high level beside an upper window.

Interior
The front door leads to a wide stair hall, with post and panel oak partition on the left, dividing off the main parlour. This has a high ceiling and large stone fireplace on the rear wall. Central transverse ceiling beam. To the right of the hall, a living room, also with chamfered ceiling beam with check and scoop stops and fireplace on the rear wall. To the side, a door to a former dairy, now kitchen, in the rear wing. This has transverse ceiling beams against front and back walls carrying the floor over, and a door into a flagged floored service room behind the stair. In the angled corner, the original newel stair with C17 handrail now replaced by the C19 main hall stair. The upper floor partially rises into the roof. Four collar beam trusses with principal rafters rising from within the walls. An oak boarded screen with a small door divides off the porch chamber.

Reason for designation
Listed as a good example of a larger C17 house with interesting contemporary internal details, and of group value in its setting with its farm buildings.
