Location
Situated at southern end of Nun Street, on corner of The Pebbles, overlooking Cross Square.
History
Gwalia was probably built before 1857 when it was leased to W Williams. The Williams' family drapers shop, and later newsagent, continued from mid C19 into later C20. Listed in Kelly's 1906 Directory as W D Williams and Co, grocers, drapers, hatters, stationers and ironmongers.
Exterior
Mid C19 house and shops in painted stucco over rubble stone with slate roof and roughcast stacks to end walls and ridge. Two-storey 3-window range to Nos 1 and 3 (Gwalia) and 2-windows to No 5.
Nos 1 and 3: (Gwalia) has three 12-pane sashes above, one to left, two to right and door and one sash to ground floor right. Ground floor left shop with plain C20 plate glass window each side of former door, now also glazed. Roughcast and rendered S end wall, shown as slate hung in old photographs.
No 5: has two 12-pane sashes above and large modern wood-framed shop window below.
Reason for designation
Prominently sited with group value with other buildings in Cross Square.
