Two capstans flank lock-gate at S entry to dock, two flank N end of entrance lock and one more is nearby at N end of quay between lock and the marina basin.
History
Made by the Butterley Co of Derbyshire for the new docks, constructed l874-88. One capstan is visible in the photograph of the first boat, the trawler 'Sybil', to enter the new dock 27.9.l888.
Exterior
l888 set of circular cast-iron capstans, hand-operated and designed to move entrance lock gate and caissons at exits from lock and from adjoining dry dock. Inscribed on the top 'l888 Butterley Company. Single Purchase-Peg In. Double Purchase-Peg out.'
