History
C18 to early C19 surround to an ancient well. In the late C14 to C15, the well at this site was known as Thergat’s well (name derived probably from its location by the turn gate, hence possibly Turkey Street); also known as Samson’s well (Samson was a common name in the C17 in the family of the local landowners, the Nicholls); also known as Nancy’s well.
Exterior
Stone surround to ancient well set in field wall arranged to form two roofless stone lined recesses, the longer and wider western one with rounded north end and the shorter east one with square north end. The coping of the flanking stone field walls continues in front of the two recesses in the form of a segmental stone arch.
Reason for designation
Included as a part of the historic water supply of Llantwit Major.
