C19 and earlier. The land was purchased from the Church in 1859. The 1855 plan shows the Rectory, demolished in 1860, in this enclosure and some of the walling shown may correspond with the existing. Part of the Castle gardens had been tenanted in the first half of the C19 by the Rev. Lisle, Rector of St. Fagans 1792-1856 (qv Memorial in Churchyard of Church of St. Mary the Blessed Virgin), who used them for extensive vegetable and fruit growing. The enclosure was then used as the Castle Kitchen Garden from 1860 until the new Kitchen Garden was built on the site of the present Museum of Welsh Life building in 1908.
Exterior
High limestone and brick walls, the western wall is faced with stone on its west side and with brick on its east side and the northern wall is faced with stone on its north side and with brick on its south side. The brick faces are for fruit growing in the kitchen garden/orchard.
