Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
Quadrangular agricultural complex built some time between 1842 and 1874 to serve Teyrdan Hall; at the former date it is not shown on the Teyrdan estate map, though it is included on that of the latter date. The range appears to have incorporated some (earlier) C18 material, in particular segmental tooled limestone arches and square-headed door surrounds; it is probable that material from one or more of the demolished ranges shown in a Moses Griffiths watercolour of Teyrdan (c1770) was re-used here.

Exterior
Large quadrangular courtyard range of agricultural buildings; single-storey. Of whitened rubble with slate roofs and oversailing eaves; deep verges and plain modern bargeboards. The front (SW-facing) range has a central gable with wide segmental arch to tunnel entrance below; rusticated voussoirs. Above, in the gable apex, is a small stone oculus, originally open and now with modern clock-face. This is flanked by 2 octagonal chimneys with plain cornices. Irregular modern openings to R and L of entrance, with plain glazed windows and boarded doors; large gables to flanking cross-ranges, that to the L with large modern boarded doors. The L return range has 2 entrances with tooled limestone surrounds and a large segmentally-arched opening to R; similar small, square windows and a ventilation slit to the L. Adjoining this side is a modern lean-to of corrugated iron. The inner (courtyard) side of the front range has a gabled entrance arch, as before; to the L is an entrance with 4-pane window above, contained within a deep gabled dormer. In the L corner is a stable entrance. 3 further stable entrances to the R range, with slit-vents in between. The L range has a modern lean-to addition of corrugated iron running the whole length; of 3 bays with modern brick dividing piers. The rear range has a similar gable to the centre, opposite the entrance, with a modern boarded barn door; flanking slit windows as before. To the L are 2 segmental cart bays (now blocked) and to the R a pair of entrances with limestone surrounds flanking a large modern barn entrance rising to the eaves. The courtyard surface, formerly cobbled, is now concrete.

Interior

Reason for designation
Included as a good example of a C19 quadrangular agricultural complex. Group value with the neighbouring cart house.
