History
There was a water corn mill called Cresswell Mill in Jeffreyston Parish in existence in 1631, in the Lawrenny Estate. Another reference to a water corn mill in the same estate archives is in deeds dated 1762 (as "Criswill Mill"). The mill site and watercourses are therefore of the early C17 or earlier. The miller's house for Creswell Corn Mill is probably of the early C19. The house has a contemporary or slightly later single-fronted cottage at its left end, and a later single storey outbuilding. It is said at one period to have served as three cottages.
Exterior
White-painted miller's house close to Cresswell Corn Mill, two storeys, one room deep, range of three windows facing S. Central door. Slate roof with tile ridge and rendered or slate-hung brick end-chimneys. Four-pane sash windows. The original miller's house has a small front yard enclosed by a white-painted rubble masonry wall, distinguishing it from the single-fronted additional cottage to its left which has no enclosed space at front. This additional unit, one window in width, has a lower roof level. It formerly had a separate entrance, but the doorway is now blocked. Further to the left is a single-storey extension. The range of buildings stands with its back to the tail-water channel below the mill.
At the rear there is a single-storey extension to the miller's house with lean-to slate roof. This has been lengthened with lean-to sheds at the rear of the additional cottage.
To the right of the house is an open-fronted shed which links the house to the mill.
Interior
Central staircase between units with high-level rear window.
Reason for designation
Listed as a good early C19 miller's house of vernacular character, with additions, and for group value with the adjacent Corn Mill.
