Group Description
Nos 1 and 2 Ty Newydd
Third-quarter C19 one-and-a-half storey terrace of 2 estate cottages, that to the N (no1) apparently with earlier core; built for Lord Penrhyn (of Penrhyn Castle), following his aquisition of the estate in 1856. Rubble construction with cambered heads to ground floor openings; continuous slate roof with tiled ridge and deep verges. Shared central- and gable end chimneys; these are tall with moulded cornice and capping and with weathercoursing. The units are designed as double-fronted, reflected pairs, though the remodelled N one is marginally longer. Half-glazed C20 doors to central entrances with C20 open lean-to porches, slate-roofed. Flanking 2-pane modern casement windows with projecting cills; tall slit-like outer windows beyond. Above each porch is a 2-pane casement under the eaves, with similar flanking windows breaking the eaves slightly and contained within mid C20 flat-roofed dormers. These are alterations, the original windows, like those above the porch, being under the eaves, as clearly seen on No2. To the rear, each unit has modern extensions and further flat-roofed dormers, as before.
