History
Probably constructed C17, perhaps broadly contemporary with the C17 remodelling of Bryn Iorcyn Manor House. This garden was originally two separate compartments divided by a wall which is shown on the OS map revised in 1977 and now survives as stub wall. The pigsties cannot be dated accurately but are of C18 or early C19 character. The entrance to the poultry loft has been repaired late C20. An additional wall has been constructed late C20 to the S and W of the W wing of the house and this is not included in the listing.

Exterior
Walled garden of stone rubble with roughly shaped stone parapet along some sections and a flat parapet along others. A short section of the wall which divided the garden survives as a stub running N from the NE corner of the house. The E wall has a circular hole set into it which has been repaired with the insertion of a brick relieving arch. This gives a view of Caergwrle Castle. Set on the inner face of the W return wall, immediately facing the house, is a range of two pairs of pigsties with a continuous slate roof and stone paved runs divided by a stone wall with stone gatepiers. The northernmost set has a loft which was probably used to house poultry and is entered via a gabled dormer rising from the eaves. N of the sties an entrance in the wall leads to a track running west of the gardens. The S wall connects the sties with the SW tip of the W wing of the house.

Interior
Interior of the pigsties not inspected at time of 1997 survey.

Reason for designation
Listed as a good example of compartmental walled garden probably of C17 date and for group value with the listed buildings and structures at Bryn Iorcyn Manor. Group value with the walled gardens S and N of Bryn Iorcyn Manor House and with the Dove House and privy at Bryn Iorcyn Manor.
