Full Report for Listed Buildings

History
Garden feature built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, architect and owner of the Brondanw estate. The gardens were laid out to his designs in various stages between his inheritance of the estate in 1908 and his death in 1978. He created here one of Wales'' most impressive gardens distinctive for its interlinked terraces, compartments and axial vistas that are aligned on the surrounding mountains of Moel Hebog, Moelwyn, Cnicht and Snowdon. The fireman was erected, in a characteristically Clough manner, to commemorate the completion of the rebuilding following the major fire in 1951.
Exterior
Rectangular lily pond at the centre of which is a statue of a uniformed fireman standing on a circular plinth. He is wearing a traditional helmet and is holding a hose which serves as a fountain.
The statue was missing at the time of the resurvey but has since been re-erected.
Reason for designation
Included for group value as an integral feature of the nationally important gardens laid out at Plas Brondanw by Clough Williams-Ellis.
