Full Report for Listed Buildings
The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

Name of Property
Gorphwysfa
Unitary Authority
Gwynedd
Location
Situated on the east side of the road between Rhosgadfan and Y Fron, the cottage is set in the rear right corner of a roughly rectangular enclosure with rubblestone walls, lower and topped with spear-headed railings and iron gate to roadside.
History
Not shown on the 1839 Tithe Map, the absence of associated farmbuildings and the relatively small plot of land suggest that the cottage may have originated after c1850 as a quarryman's dwelling, connected either with Moel Tryfan Quarry, operational by 1800, or Alexandra Quarry, which opened in 1862.
Exterior
Quarryman's cottage. Single-storey symmetrical 2-room plan. Snecked rubblestone blocks, slate roof with internal end stacks. 2-pane sashes to either side of slightly offset panelled half-glazed door under narrow overlight. Low wall with short spear-headed railings to front and later lean-to on right gable end.
Interior
Interior not accessible at time of Survey.
Reason for designation
Included as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a mid-C19 cottage, illustrating the survival and development of the single-storey and loft form into the second half of the C19; the cottage retains its original character virtually intact, not only in its overall plan-form but also in its detailing. The cottage forms a significant element of the settlement at Penyffridd.
