Situated on track (Weirglodd-newydd) immediately above Talysarn.
History
Shown on the 1840 Tithe Map, this pair of early C19 cottages was probably built as quarryworkers' cottages for one of the several slate quarries opening in the area at this time.
Interior
Has matchboarded ceiling with lower parts of 2 A-frame trusses visible beneath and a short screen immediately to right of entrance in right room; C19 plank door leads to left room.
Reason for designation
Included as one of a pair of purpose-built and well-preserved quarryworkers' cottages, built in the local vernacular tradition and forming a distinctive component in this important upland encroachment landscape.
Group Description
Brynarvon and Weirglodd-newydd
Long rectangular plan, aligned roughly south-west to north-east, consisting of two 2-room cottages with single-bay addition to right cottage (Weirglodd Newydd). Roughly coursed rubblestone, painted to left cottage (Brynarvon) which also has rendered gable end; slate roof with coped verges to original right gable end. Long left cottage has C19 casement on either side of C20 door to right of centre; ridge stack to right, which is shared with right cottage. This has identical door and window pattern with plank door and small-paned sashes; ridge stack (formerly an integral end stack) to right. Addition to right is set back and has slender integral end stack to right, the only stack not to have slate drips. Drystone walled garden enclosures to front.
