Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

Description

Period

History
Built in the period 1856-75 by John Blandy-Jenkins and first shown on the 1875 Ordnance Survey. The W wing was probably intended first to be a coach house. Converted for domestic accommodation in 1996 by Parker Renwick Partnership. Llanharan House was built by Rees Powell before 1750 and was subsequently enlarged by Richard Hoare Jenkins in the early C19, with additions by the Blandy-Jenkins family later in the C19.

Exterior
Comprising 2 adjoining wings of 2 storeys, of rubble stone and slate roofs. Facing S, the taller 2-window E wing has flat headed windows in the upper storey, a window lower R and doorway lower L, both under segmental heads and all renewed in earlier openings. The gable stack to the L, rising above the W wing, is rebuilt in snecked stone. The lower 2-window W wing has segmental openings in the lower storey and windows beneath the wall plate above, all renewed in earlier openings. The W gable end facing the house has a bellcote of coursed dressed stone and is surmounted by a ball finial. In the gable is a round clock face in a square wooden frame over a blocked former doorway with elliptical arch, wide enough for a carriage.

Interior
Not inspected.

Reason for designation
Listed for group value with Llanharan House and other associated listed items.
