Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
A probably c1800 walled garden, which could be contemporary with the slightly earlier house.

A large rectangular walled garden about 50m x 60m with walls about 3m in height. The walls are built of coursed squared red sandstone rubble with dressed copings. The inner faces are in red brick. There is a pair of red brick gatepiers and wrought iron gates which have been introduced in the late C20. There are three other small original doorways.

Interior
There is evidence on the north wall of greenhouses now removed.

Reason for designation
Included as a late C18 or early C19 walled garden having group value with the adjacent The Grondra and its icehouse.
