Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

Description

Period

History
A village school and schoolmaster's house which dates from about 1840, with the schoolroom apparently of one build, although the school at St Arvans is said not to have opened until 1873. The building is now wholly in domestic use.

Exterior
The building is constructed of coursed grey sandstone rubble with Bath stone ashlar dressings and a replacement slate roof. Single storey schoolroom to the right with a two storey master's house to the left. The house is three windows wide, the left hand one, which is set slightly back, is probably a later, perhaps modern, extension, athough built in character. The windows are all cross-framed casements in painted stone surrounds. The two right hand bays of the house are a balanced elevation with central gabled porch which also is a modern alteration. Three red brick stacks. To the right the school-room is gabled to the front and has a large 3-light 2-transom window. Small quatrefoil ventilator in the gable which has plain bargeboards. Rear elevation not seen.

Interior
Not available for inspection at resurvey.

Reason for designation
Included as an early/mid C19 village school which, despite conversion to domestic use, is largely unchanged externally and has group value with the immediately adjacent Church of St. Arvan.
