History
The barn is probably contemporary with the house and therefore c1600. It is a three bay barn which has had a lean-to added to the right gable, probably in the C18, and a granary added in line and to the same ridge line to the left gable.
Exterior
Built of random local sandstone rubble with corrugated sheet roofs, the doors infilled with red brick. The main front was the barn with the entrance in the blocked waggon doors. These contain late C19 or early C20 plain doors of vertical boarding in an elliptical head. To the left of this are two enlarged openings with modern 3 over 6 pane windows and to the right a 3 over 3 pane window of similar type. The lean-to to the right has an older, possibly C18, plank door. The barn gable has a C17 4-light unglazed 'window' with diamond set oak mullions (one is missing) and above this a slit vent. The left gable is wholly covered by the later granary. Open cart shed below with the boarded front of the granary now covered in modern sheeting. The gable end has a stone staircase rising to the granary door, plank door with timber hood over. Blind rear wall.
Interior
The barn has a principal rafter roof with three tiers of purlins. The lean-to has a staggered purlin roof with secondary rafters all complete. Interior of granary not seen.
Reason for designation
Included as a barn dating from c1600 which has strong group value with the adjacent Lower House Farmhouse.
