Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

Description

Broad Class

Period

History
Small L-plan cottage, perhaps later C19 altered in early C20. Little evidence of Coates Carter work, but the little lancet window echoes those on St Philomena's opposite, and there were tiled fireplaces similar to those by Coates Carter, now removed.

Exterior
House, whitewashed roughcast with Bridgwater-tile roofs. Single-storey, L-plan originally, now T-plan. Flat-roofed porch in angle with arched door and small leaded lancet light to left side wall. Single pointed window to left wing of house, 4-pane sash in wall of wing at right angles to right. End-wall stack to left wing. Garden front has gable to left and 2 ground-floor 4-pane sashes. C20 2-window wing added to left.

Interior
Simple interior with 3-room plan, each room with entry in chamfered angle such that short lobby from front door serves all 3. Board doors. Kitchen has small fireplace and 2 wall cupboards to left.

Reason for designation
Included as a small single-storey L-plan cottage of neat design, among the least altered on the island.
