History
Part of the home-farm for the adjacent gentry house of Glandwr, part of an economic landscape which also included walled gardens and orchards. The farm appears to have been developed from the mid C18, with clear evidence for improvement and enlargement in the early-mid C19. This building belongs at least in part to this phase of improvement: The main range is dated 1835, but the rear wing appears to be somewhat earlier. In process of conversion to domestic use at time of inspection.
Exterior
Main range is aligned N-S; 3 bays, lofted, and built of massive blocks of rubble stone; renewed slate roofs. Advanced central gable with wide doorway with heavy stone lintel, and loft door above with date inscribed on ashlar lintel. Full-height cart entry also with heavy lintel in R-hand bay.
E-W wing is lower, taking account of the sloping site. A straight-joint marks the junction with the main range and this wing is constructed of smaller-scale rubble. Two-storeys, lofted, with cart entry to right with heavy stone lintel, and window (recorded as a doorway in earlier description) with dormer gable to loft over: this has window with stone lintel. Attached to the rear corner of this wing is an apple store: a small building, square in plan, and 2-storeyed. External staircase to first floor chamber, against gable of wing, and doorway to ground floor in east elevation.
Reason for designation
Listed as a traditional stable and cartshed range with good vernacular character especially in the use of materials, which forms part of an exceptionally good farm group at Glandwr.
