Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
Probably mid C18, contemporary with other outbuildings to the rear of the house and with the walls to the enclosed garden.

Exterior
A single-storey cartshed with lofted game larder abutting the right (S) end. Built of rubble masonry. Roof of small slates, with tiled ridge and stone copings; to the rear of the game larder is a tall, brick stack. The cartshed is at the left (N) end of the range, entrances facing W. The cartshed is of 2 bays, each with a segmental-headed entrance of brick arches on rubble piers; each brick arch has a stressed extrados course. The game larder is at the right end of the range, the front wall set back slightly from the front wall of the cartshed. Entrance is through a square-headed doorway in the W side; slightly offset to the N end, the doorway has a slate lintel and contains a boarded door. Flanking the doorway are triangular vents, 2 to each side. There is a small-paned window in the S gable wall and access to the loft is via stone steps to the rear (E side).

Interior
The cartshed is of 3 roof bays, with exposed sawn timber trusses. The game larder has game hooks on the joists and retains a small cast-iron fireplace against the rear wall.

Reason for designation
Listed as an early C18 cartshed range, substantially intact and included for group value with the adjacent Dinam and outbuildings.
