Location
Spanning River Usk, and linking Bridge Street with Watergate.
History
1563, replacing a bridge destroyed by floods about 35 years earlier. Many subsequent alterations for example repaired in 1772, widened in 1794 under supervision of bridge builder Thomas Edwards (son of the great William Edwards), at cost of £1000, repaired in 1801 under supervision of John Mound. Theophilus Jones remarked (1809) that some of the new work had collapsed. Widened in C20 by the addition of a metal framed foot passage to either side.
Exterior
Stone bridge of seven segmental arches with stone parapet.
Reason for designation
Graded I as fine historic bridge with C16 origins and strong group value with adjacent listed buildings.
