Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History

Exterior
History: Probably early C17 in origin, though much altered. The house appears to comprise a hall and cross-wing type, with storeyed porch in the angle of the two ranges. The cross wing was later raised in height, and the main range partially rebuilt (to front and rear) in brick; it also appears to have been re-roofed to a lower pitch, possibly at a later date. Exterior: Comprises a long main range, with higher cross wing to NE, and storeyed porch in the angle of the main range with the cross wing. Main range is fronted in brick, but timber- framing is exposed in the gable end. Cross-wing also timber-framed, the original roof-line visible in both elevations, together with the thinner framing associated with its later heightening. A lean-to extension obscures its ground floor. The porch is also timber framed, with some baluster-type decoration exposed below the upper window. 2x3-light casement windows in the main range, the lower windows with single ring cambered heads. Wood mullioned casements in gable end and in cross wing, renewed, though possibly in earlier openings. Slate roofs throughout, with brick gable end and axial stacks with moulded brick caps. Notwithstanding alterations, the building is an important example of the regional vernacular tradition of the C17, both in its planning and construction.
