Spanning the River Severn and linking the old town with Penygloddfa.
History
A substantial road bridge of 1827 by Thomas Penson. Replacing an ancient timber bridge on the site. Pavements with railings replaced a parpapet in 1853 following an accident.
Exterior
Twin carriageway stone bridge. 3 graceful 60ft wide arches with stepped rusticated freestone voussoirs, keystones. Local blue stone spandrels. Prowed cutwaters, rounded downstream. Original panelled stone parapet replaced by walkways with iron railings, carried on struts from iron arches springing from rusticated freestone pilasters added to cutwaters. Simple piers to Broad Street end. Curved returns with freestone parapet to Penygloddfa end. Stone staircase down to Frankwell Street on East side.
