Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
Probably early C19 and shown on the tithe map of 1843. The cottages were remodelled in the late C19 with new doors and windows, the stacks c1900. This makes an interesting contrast with other cottages in the village which were not altered at this time.

Exterior
No. 2 is smaller than no. 1, and has doorway to L and window to R. Upper storey window aligned above that below. Rear has 2 x 4-pane horned sashes offset to L, that to R wider.

Interior
No access to interior at time of inspection.

Reason for designation
Listed as a well-preserved unaltered cottage exhitibing strong C19 character. Group value with no. 2 and other listed buildings in the Conservation Area.

Group Description
Nos 1 and 2 Berwyn House 1 is to the L, and 2 is to the R. Asymmetrical 2-storey 3-window range constructed of coursed rubble stone under a slate roof; red brick end stacks with yellow brick banding. Panelled doors with small-pane overlights, grouped to centre. Horned sash windows with margin glazing, under flat heads with stone sills.
