Date of Amendment
27/10/2003
Name of Property
Coedllys
Unitary Authority
Ceredigion
Location
Situated down farm-track some 1.3km S of Llanilar up lane running S from Llanilar Bridge.
History
Late C19 farmhouse rebuilt apparently for the Castle Hill estate, now divided into two tenanted parts, the main house and the service wing. A farm is marked on the 1845 Tithe map, but not to quite same plan. Said improbably to have had a date of 1412 on an outbuilding, according to a 1960 centenary brochure of village school, but not found.
Exterior
Farmhouse, coursed rubble stone with slate roofs and black-brick end stacks. Two-storey, 3-window main house and matching, slightly lower 2-window service range to left. Small paned windows, board doors with 3-pane overlights, stone voussoirs to slightly cambered heads, slate sills. Main house has large horned 16-pane sashes and centre door, service range has smaller 12-pane sashes and door in right bay. Rear wing added on rear of service range, rendered.
Interior
Not inspected at time of survey.
Reason for designation
Included as a late example of the typical 3-bay farmhouse of the region, but unusually well-detailed with small-paned sashes and stone window heads.
