Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

Reason for designation
Nos 1-7 The West End are listed for their special architectural interest as forming a well-preserved mid C19 terrace of houses prominently sited on the main approach to the town and for its contribution to the historical integrity of The West End and Townsend.

Group Description
1-7 The West End A terrace of 3-storey houses, of painted pebble-dashed walls, except Nos 1 which has a painted brick front; No 2 has recently cleaned chequerboard brickwork and limestone dressings. Slate roof with roughcast stacks, except for a brick stack at the L end. Nos 1-6 are 3 reflected pairs of 2-bay houses. Round-headed entrances are in the inner bays and have overlights. No 1 has a panelled door, No 2 a modern replacement door, Nos 3 and 4 panelled doors. Nos 1-4 have moulded imposts and keystones. All windows are 4-pane sashes, except for replacement windows to No 2, with middle storey sill band. Nos 3-6 have plain rendered architraves. Between Nos 4 and 5 is a tablet with raised letters and numerals reading 'The West End 1869'. No 7, at the R end, is a 3-bay house, of which the centre and L-hand bays are set back under projecting eaves. Its narrower central bay has a replacement panel door with round-headed overlight and in a moulded architrave with keystone. The R-hand has a 2-storey canted bay window. The L-hand has tripartite sash windows in architraves, and with keystone in the middle storey. The upper storey also has keyed architraves and all windows are 4-pane sashes. The R gable end has 4-pane sash windows to the L side in lower and middle storeys, inserted window on the R side in the lower storey, next to a 1-storey lean-to. No 1 has small-pane sash windows in its L gable end. The rear is rubble stone, partly rendered, and each pair of houses has a lower 2-storey gabled wing. Windows are mainly small-pane sashes. A vertical joint is between Nos 6 and 7. No 7 has replacement windows.
