Probably early C19, and externally unaltered. Now converted to flats.  

Exterior
This building is addressed as both No.20 and No.24, but has only one entrance and the appearance of only ever having one. Rear elevation not seen.  

Interior
Interior not seen at resurvey. Recorded as having a stick baluster open-well stair. The building has been converted to flats.  

Reason for designation
Included for its special architectural interest as a probably early C19 house of definite character near Monmouth town centre.  

Group Description
Nos. 20 and 24 St. James' Street Faced in roughcast and painted with a Welsh slate roof. Double depth central entry plan. Three storeys, five windows, with a wider gap between bays 2 and 3 where the main stack is. Central semi-circular headed doorway with broken pediment and fluted Doric columns, 6-panel door. Windows are plain 6 over 6 pane sashes with stone cills, second floor windows are 3 over 6. Modillion eaves cornice, plain roof with main stack between bays 2 and 3, secondary stack on right gable. Garret window in right hand gable. Rear elevation not seen, but is partly obscured by the adjoining No. 37 Whitecross Street (qv).
