Location
On the main road going north out of Monmouth which rises slowly above the town.
History
Early C19 and presumably contemporary with Nos. 6-10 (even) (qv) . It is marked on the 1835 map, but not on the 1800 one. It is shown with the original timber 3-light windows and a pantiled roof in a photograph of 1860.
Exterior
The house is entered down a shared passage through the street door beside that of No.6 and within the curtilege of that house.
Interior
Very slight cross beams are visible internally.
Reason for designation
Included for its special architectural interest as a pair of early C19 houses which, despite alteration, retain definite character, with strong group value in Hereford Road.
Group Description
Nos. 2 and 4 Hereford Road
Rendered and painted throughout with a Welsh slate roof. Two storeys. The street elevation (No. 2) is one bay with wooden double doors with side windows on the ground floor and 3-light wooden casement above. The long elevation has four windows, with two wooden 3-light casements to No. 2 and two wooden casements to No.4. Roof hipped at the street end with tall rendered stack to No. 2 and another at the back for No. 4.
