Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History
Probably C17 in origins, and timber framed: said to retain tie-beam trusses with collars, and some wattle and daub panels. Remodelled in the C19, then facade detail all renewed in the later C20. Formerly 2 cottages, now with shops to ground floor and a flat above. No 39 is said to occupy the site of a trhough way which led to the rear of No 37 when it was an inn. No 41 is part of the same build as the adjoining 43-45; No 43 is the flat above.

Exterior
39, 41 & 43A form a group. Three-window 2-storey range, the L-hand unit of a different build and with lower eaves. Rendered to ground floor, roughcast to 1st floor, slate roofs, the stacks missing. Upper storey has small-pane top-hung wooden windows. Ground floor has central entrance with late C20 part-glazed wooden door, leading to flat above (43A). Inside entrance to No 43A is the original end wall of the house, of small-scantling timber-framing on a stone plinth. Rear said to be built into a steep bank with a flat-roofed addition. 39 has a shop-front with C20 half-glazed panelled door to L and a plain-glazed window to R.

Interior
No features of historic interest seen inside.

Reason for designation
Listed, notwithstanding late C20 alteration to front, for retention of C17 timber-framing. Group value with surrounding listed buildings in Clwyd Street.
