C18 with some C19 external and internal details. The rear wing to St Mary Street, listed in 1976, is now described separately.
Reason for designation
One of two early C19 houses with well-preserved character and Group Value with adjacent listed buildings in Wheat Street and St Mary Street.
Group Description
Nos.2 and 3 Wheat Street
Rendered front to Wheat Street of 3 storeys, 4 windows with slate roof and flanking stacks. Sash windows in plain reveals, four panes wide on both second and first floors (12 pane windows on top floor, 16-pane elsewhere). Doorways, with pilasters and entablatures; to No.2 with plain pilasters, panelled reveals and four-panelled door and to No.3 with fluted pilasters, shallow reveals and six-panelled door with top two panels glazed. Right return of No 2 has small sash window in attic, and a 16-pane sash window to other 3 floors.
