Full Report for Listed Buildings

The list description is not intended to be a complete inventory of what is listed: it is principally intended to aid identification. By law, the definition of a listed building includes the entire building (i) and any structure or object that is fixed to the said building and ancillary to it and (ii) any other structure or object that forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, and was within the curtilage of the building, and ancillary to it, on the date on which said building was first included in the list, or on 1 January 1969, whichever was later.

History

Exterior
Late C18 or early C19 shop and house premises in whitewashed rubble stone with imitation slate roof and large stone right end stack, shared with No 4. (A stone stack at left end, shared with No 6 has been removed). Two-storey front, unusual in that the ground floor appears to have been designed as commercial premises. Three 12-pane sashes above with timber lintels and slate sills. Ground floor under single long timber lintel; door, large 16-pane sash, door and similar sash. Slate sills. To left, flush-panelled 6-panel door with small paned overlight, grid tracery, while other door has pair of 3-panel doors, flush panelled but centre panel since glazed, and traceried overlight with unusual oval and lozenge design. Unusual integrated shop and house premises, perhaps associated with the market.

Interior

Reason for designation
Group value with other buildings in Market Square. Terraced row is commonly known as Market Street, though marked as Market Square on OS.
