Situated on street line in terraced row overlooking rear courtyard of Market Buildings.
Exterior
Late C18 or early C19 shop and house premises in whitewashed rubble stone with imitation slate roof and large stone right end stack, shared with No 4. (A stone stack at left end, shared with No 6 has been removed). Two-storey front, unusual in that the ground floor appears to have been designed as commercial premises. Three 12-pane sashes above with timber lintels and slate sills. Ground floor under single long timber lintel; door, large 16-pane sash, door and similar sash. Slate sills. To left, flush-panelled 6-panel door with small paned overlight, grid tracery, while other door has pair of 3-panel doors, flush panelled but centre panel since glazed, and traceried overlight with unusual oval and lozenge design.
Unusual integrated shop and house premises, perhaps associated with the market.
Reason for designation
Group value with other buildings in Market Square. Terraced row is commonly known as Market Street, though marked as Market Square on OS.
