Location
In the Gadlys area of the town set against a bank at the end of this road beside No l7; a short distance SW of the blast furnaces.
History
Constructed after l827, when Matthew Wayne ironmaster and coal owner of Merthyr established a single furnace at Gadlys (in conjunction with GáRáMorgan and E M Williams). May be contemporary with the casting house and the last two furnaces built in l855-6. Shown on lst edition OS map of l868.
Exterior
Snecked rubble construction with stock brick dressings; the two principal elevations are battered. High SW side has 3 apertures visible, the 4th is obscured behind the garage of neighbouring property; single opening to the lower SE end. All of these openings are semi-circular, that to the SE end has been infilled and the openings on the SW side have been blocked behind the arch. Overgrown to the top but formerly with oval apertures into which the ore was placed for purifying.
Reason for designation
Included for group value with the former casting house and blast engine house and the scheduled blast furnaces.
