History
Early C20 statue of John, Third Marquess of Bute, 1847-1900. The Third Marquess inherited the enormous fortune of his father when still an infant. With an annual income of £300,000, he and his architect William Burgess transformed Cardiff Castle into an elaborate medieval fantasy, and rebuilt Castell Coch.  

Exterior
Standing bronze figure of Marquess in peer's robes, R foot advanced, R hand grasping robes. On tall granite pedestal with inscriptions (front) "John III Marquess of Bute" (heraldic shield over); (left) "Baron Cardiff 1847-1900" (heraldic shield over); (right) "Earl of Windsor" (heraldic shield over); (rear) "Earl of Dumfries".
