Location
On E corner of St James’ Crescent and N side of Walter Road. No 42 St James’ Crescent is part of same development but with entrance facing Crescent rather than Walter Road.
Exterior
Terrace of 5 houses circa 1865, in Jacobethan style with shaped gables. Three storeys, stucco with banded ground floor, slate or tiled roofs. Each house has 2 bays, R bay broader and slightly advanced, shaped gable with pinnacle, and urns at shoulders (lost at Nos 95 and 96); second floor window with moulded surround, first floor window with moulded surround, ground floor splayed bay. L bay narrower slightly recessed, gable with pinnacle (lost at No 96); second floor round-headed window with moulded surround, first floor window with moulded surround, ground floor entrance doorway with moulded doorcase with shallow bracketed hood; but No 43 St James’ Crescent has extra bay window, and is entered from side, No 96 has window with shallow architrave. Return to W (left) has gable with pinnacle and urns to shoulders, second floor round-headed window with moulded surround, two first floor windows with moulded surround, ground floor deep porch with round-headed entrance doorway, round-headed windows to sides, window to R of porch; to L, one window to first and ground floors, and lower block with one window; single-storey ground floor section set forward, door to L, then tripartite sash window, then splayed bay window. Return to R (W) has narrow porch.
Reason for designation
Included as well-detailed stucco terrace in Jacobethan style, on corner site overlooking St James’ churchyard (despite degradation of No 96).
